Gifting shares to my wife: any implications in USA?
Discussion
It’s generally well known that in the UK a gift between spouses has no tax or other implications at the time the gift is made. This applies to any type of asset gifted from one spouse to the other.
What is the situation in the USA? I have a block of shares in a global company headquartered in the USA whose shares, obviously, are denominated in USA $s and are traded on the NYSE. I am registered as a Non-resident Alien for USA IRS tax purposes (I have filed a form W8-BEN). I am thinking of gifting some of these shares to my wife. What are the implications of me doing this in the USA…are there any?
