Following on from my thread about RBS yesterday, one reply was about Starling Bank. I had a bit of a read up on these challenger banks and thought I'd give them a whirl to see what the fuss is about. I was absolutely amazed that in under 5 minutes from downloading the app, I'd opened my account and had a sort code, account number and my debit card was added to my Apple Pay.
Getting a bit ahead of myself now, but I did wonder if there's anyone that simply uses Starling as their only account? I can't recall the last time I needed to go into a branch, and my day-to-day banking needs are very straightforward and all bar a relatively small day-to-day balance is kept elsewhere.

I've had a business account with them for a year or more, no issues. Well except the fact you can't open a sub account (or a 2nd business account) to keep the taxman's dues separate. I've also got a Monzo for personal but I prefer Starling.
Just open a business savings account with the likes of Virgin or Aldermore. Both can be managed entirely online and can transfer in and out as you please. technodup said:

I'm not sure if it's there for the business accounts but for the personal current accounts there is a 'spaces' section which lets you remove money into a separate pots. It will be removed from your current balance but still effectively be in the account accruing interest. You can transfer it back into your balance at any time.Starling is my main current account and has been for around 18 months. It has been a great account. No issues and great rates on foreign currencies (you just pay MasterCard’s exchange rate and 0% on top).
I still have my old Lloyds current account just in case I need to do something in a dedicated branch, but I don’t really ever use it or need it

Starling or Monzo?I've had a Starling account for a couple of years. They have really stolen a march, IMHO, with their recent switchable GBP/Euro account utilising a single debit card.
In-app switch to dual-use, and it'll feed off the respective account after detecting the currency of the transaction. But you use the same debit card, wherever you are.

I found another thing about it the other day, was on their chat thing about a card payment which didn't complete, I asked if I could get a transcript for the merchant but actually it comes up at the end asking if you want the whole thing emailed to you. No he said/she said like you'd have from a call centre.
I sent the transcript to the merchant, now they know I'm not bulls
tting them (as they'd thought!).
And as of today you can add other directors to the app so multiple people can (officially) access it.

Can you use the Starling card to link to paypal? Getting fed up with excessive currency conversion fees at the moment with my current bank.
Of course you can; it's a bank like any other. But with PayPal, don't you get PayPal's (dreadful) currency conversion rates rather than your own bank's?

I have got Starling and Monzo (mainly as low-cost cards for use abroad....and as a "beer card" (Monzo is highly visible at a bar Getting a bit ahead of myself now, but I did wonder if there's anyone that simply uses Starling as their only account? ).......but I'm such a dinosaur I still like to be able to login on a laptop (big screen) to be able to check on things, perhaps download some transactions on occasion.....& neither appear to offer that.
In the meantime, our "ye olde" Santander a/c has an app that is now pretty decent, as well as all the online bells'n'whistles.
I suspect the challengers may find themselves being challenged over time!

Starling has plans to roll-out online banking. It'll happen for their business account customers first and then personal customers later.

I can't say I have any need for it. My current account deals with my direct debits, all other spending is done on my Amex card, which then just requires a single payment to be scheduled each month to clear it. There's very little action in my current account, and the Amex app and online banking are ace (including Excel export etc)

You can d/l statements on Starling, just not on a pc. But you can easily email them to your PC.
