Spotted the above and got me thinking of how little cash i actually even carry or use.

I guess its becoming a headache for business's with fraud and counterfeit money too.

Few years back i was in a car dealers and some guy wanted to park a ton of cash on them but they refused to take anymore than 2k in reddies

I am probably going to regret saying this but we have not had a counterfeit note in the last 5 years.

You always know it's a slow news day when there's an article about a decline in cash transactions. Well, it's either cash or cheques.

And then the words "cashless society" get thrown around. The reality is we're decades away from a cashless society. And despite the best efforts of banks, cheques probably have a another 10-20 years minimum before they're consigned to history.

I live in a very touristy area, lots of small businesses that only take cash, cafe's and such like.

I wonder about their viability as businesses if there was no cash.

What about a chargeback or similar?

have really noticed this since coming back to the UK, barely ever seem to need actual folding - its all contactless, or apple wallet, or FAST transfer from your mobile.

Back in SE Asia you still need a few inches to do any kind of transaction.

Probably not, I'm not surprised. I'm sure a lot of people don't use them these days. I don't for personal use, but do occasionally at work or with a couple of clubs I'm involved in.

But the fact is a lot of people still do - over half a billion written per year at the last count.

Fair enough. I guess i read that and it made me stop and think about how little and most people i know actually use cash.

Then again Builder and Cabbies for example wont like the idea amongst other small retailers.

Have only used cash once in the last 6 months.

That was because the machine in the John Lewis car park was faulty and wasn’t accepting cards.

The reality is that cash has been going out of fashion for a while not just because of covid but some Die Hards never want to accept it.

Have had the same £50 in my back pocket for months and fairly recently paid in cash that had been building up in the house for years

Well, cash has been around for some 2,500 years so let's not rush too fast to get rid of it.

Life is easier all round with cards, phones and the various apps

Business's not that keen to take cash preferring cash payments now.

Not so good for the drug industry i dare say !

I'm 31 and I've never written a cheque. Not sure I've ever had a cheque book.

Spent my first cash since lockdown the other day...on a haircut. The move to a cashless society was well underway prior to COVID-19 but has definitely been accelerated as a result of this.

I always use cash where possible, I just find it easier to keep track of my spending with cash. I put £100 in my wallet, and when my wallet is empty, I know I've spent £100.

I can never keep track of lots of small transactions with cards, always end up spending more, and have a nightmare trying to track / remember each purchase when going through my statement. So many times I've been shocked by credit card bills, because I've lost track of what I was spending. Apart from the odd occasion when a credit card is handy, I would happily cut the thing up.

Apart from that, if we pay for everything by card government / Inland Revenue, know exactly what you're spending, what you bought, where you are, and who you're buying from.

No more cash tipping, no more getting your mate to do a cash job at mates rates, no more pocket money for your kids / grand kids.

So I say use it or lose it.

My bank stopped issuing cheque books about 5 years ago (maybe longer).

At first, we were a bit concerned it would be a hassle but I’ve never missed them until now. We’ve started using a farm shop near us during the COVID lockdown and it’s an honesty box approach - no one else in there and you just put your cash or cheque in the box. Problem is that we don’t have cheques and only have a few notes around - we could easily get more notes from a cash point but that’s not particularly helpful when you are buying 12 eggs for £2.50 plus a pint of milk for <£1.

Other than that, I don’t think I’ve spent any cash for almost a year - according to my bank records, I last visited a cash point last September. Even bank cards are becoming redundant - I just use ApplePay.

My mum still uses cash (and insists on sending us cheques when she owes us for anything which is a hassle as we have to go to the bank to pay them in), but she’s too old and set in her ways to change.

I'd say I was quite frivolous, and neither have I.
