Phone scam - new one to me.

Telephone call at 9.00 pm this evening. Thought I'd let the full picture unfold,

• Hello Mr Rockin, we have the share register of xyz plc in which your name appears
• We represent a client making an offer for xyz plc
• They intend to acquire 51% of the company
• They have already acquired 33% from institutional shareholders
• They are now in a position to make a very high offer to private shareholders for the next 18%
• They've had a very profitable year so can get a tax advantage from this acquisition even if paying a very high price for the shares
• The price has not yet been determined but will be between £8 and £17 per share
• As a first step they'd like to email to me a Non Disclosure Agreement and a Personal Information Form to complete and return.

They then phoned back again

Someone phoned my Dad a few weeks back, I answered the call and had the exact same offer made (can't remember which company the shares are for).

My Dad passed away 7 years ago, but as the caller didn't establish who they were talking to they wasted a good 10 minutes of their time talking to me.

I had a good one today.

My home phone rang showing a UK landline number.... an automated computer voice starting speaking when I picked up. It said;

"This is a security warning from BT. Your broadband is due to be disconnected today due to unauthorised devices accessing your connection. If you want to stay with BT please click "1" now to speak to one of our technical support advisors...."

I'm not with BT, but I reckon quite a few people will be clicking "option 1"....

I used to get that call on our landline at least once a day.
Eventually I got sick of it so I pressed "1".
After about 10 seconds an Indian bloke said "My name's Eric", I said " No it, fking, isn't you lying c t".
I then launched into a 10 minute barrage of swearing and personal insults, all the time the ass on the other end was trying to read his script.
Eventually he gave up and ended the call.
I've never had that call since and, for the record, there was no huge phone bill and I wasn't disconnected.

Oh right - it was a new one to me, but clearly isn't new then. I only mention it as I thought it was rather a sly ruse.

I've never had the share scam one though, perhaps because I don't own any shares. I've never heard of it before though, so it's a new one on me, too. However a quick Google shows it's not new: https://conversation.which.co.uk/money/telephone-s...

The share one will be the usual “please send us a fee to cover the transaction before we purchase them”
