Rewards Card Recommendations - Alternative to Amex Gold
Discussion
Looking to switch away from our Amex Gold before the annual fee kicks in because I don't feel I'd get enough of a benefit from the card to warrant £140.
As well as the Gold, we have a Horizon card from MBNA which we were transferred to when the old MBNA/Virgin Atlantic partnership ended. This gets 0.5% cashback on most purchases paid as an account credit in January. It's also free to use abroad, which is very handy, and there's no annual fee.
We spend just shy of £40k/yr across the two cards in a year, with about two thirds of that on Amex and the balance (places which don't take Amex) on the Horizon. Balances always cleared at month-end.
We don't travel abroad often at the moment so the insurance perks are somewhat lost on us and some of the premium cards require huge spend amounts to really look like good value, or require you to take flights quite often for Avios to be worthwhile.
Are there any other good rewards cards out there which would be worthwhile at this level of spend? Is the basic "green" Amex worth getting - It's only £60/yr and we could probably out-earn that in points quite easily.
Any advice welcomed!

If you against paying any card fee how about the Amex BA blue card

You get 1 avios per pound and a 2 for 1 travel voucher after spending £20k in a a year.
Edited to add the avios don't expire unless you don't add to them for 36 months so although you say not travelling abroad at the moment you could build quite a stash for when you do.

I'll be watching this thread, my Amex Gold is up for renewal too and I'm looking to use the points in over 12 months after buying a house so a Green or Free may be the one for me (I don't travel enough atm to justify gold)
annoyingly amex changed their signup bonus cooling off period from 6 to 24 months recently: https://www.headforpoints.com/2019/03/21/american-...

The change in sign-up bonus length is the reason for the post. Previously my partner and I churned cards every year between us and it worked fantastically. The points were easy to convert to things like Nectar or Amazon vouchers when we didn't want airmiles and were easy money really. The longer churn means we're looking for other options.
Sadly neither of us are self-employed so the business cards aren't worthwhile.
We feel like we're very in-between on our spending where we spend enough that we should be able to get some good perks, but not enough to really make the most of the highest-fee cards.
