Putting Daughter on the Car Insurance....

Not really sure where to post this, thought there might be a dedicated car insurance section but couldn't see one.
Usual story really which I'm sure plenty on here have had to go through.
Daughter has passed her test and currently drives a Yaris (paid about £900 for insurance for the year and car has to be fitted with a black box). She's off to Uni in September so it's just not worth keeping the car and we might as well cash in the insurance to get some back.
I'm also in the process of seriously downgrading my car to something small and practical, Fiesta or something as ideally I'd like to add her onto the insurance so she can use it when shes back for Christmas etc.

So...getting some quotes, for me it's about £200, to add her you're talking £1400'ish (without black box, I wouldn't even consider that..!). I then thought about seeing how much say insurance for a month is for her, about £450, so not cheap either.

It just seems a hell of a lot of money given she'll hardly drive the car as she'll not be home much and even when she is home it'll only be a few miles to work or round her mates. Someone needs to come up with the concept of pay-as-you-drive-insurance

Anyone got any ideas or is every option just going to be expensive ?

I used Veygo app. For the odd day and odd couple of weeks.think it was taken over by admiral. Was a lot cheaper than an annual policy. This was around 3 years ago so may have changed.

My nephew's managed without cars throughout university and my niece is now, as did their parents.

If were talking sense it probably doesnt work financially to cash in on the remaining insurance. Its likely youll get so little back that it wont be worth and youd be much better off letting it see out the year for NCB.

Isn't that what's led to this situation?

She doesn't really need a car at university, so the Yaris is going.

It's just useful if she at least can use her dad's car when at home.

I don't see anything especially remarkable about that.

Point taken. If it's too much then yes we'll have to sort out other ways of getting around. The main thing is she can get to work whenever she needs to if she has access to a car.
We're not so much 'welded' to our cars but they just make our lives a hell of a lot easier all round. It's just a case of whether the outlay is worth it.

Can you not just keep the yaris? and then at least she 'll be gaining no claims aswell.

as long as you give a run round regularly?

was going to suggest she put you on her insurance and you used the yaris until she's home.

but not sure if that's fronting but happy to be corrected.

Maybe a little left field but have you tried quotes for your daughter as the insured but with you as the main driver? Did this for my daughter in a similar position and worked out quite a bit cheaper.

As someone else also said, keeping the Yaris is possibly an option given its all paid for and she's got her insurance running on it now,as you say, she'll at least get a years no claims on it soon enough.
