Just received a nice high three figure check for account charges I had on a LLoyds account between 1995(?) and 2008.

Letter looks legit, so followed the first rule of check if it is a scam or not, and because I can't remember my telephone banking password from 11 years ago, or the full account number or e-mail - used to set an e-mail up for each account / loan / credit card, usually with a name like lloydssuck@bigschlongs.co.uk and can't remember a/c, on the letter it is ****nnnn.

I've failed their security and they'll have to reset my security details. I was then asked for a current e-mail to send details to which I could click on a confirm link............or they could send details how to verify my identity in the post which I'd then send back to them. Opted to option 2 as there isn't a LLoyds bank I can get to any more, but should I be wary of this, is it a scam.

A quick google does suggest they're giving refunds for similar reasons, but at the same time, could a scammer be piggybacking on their modii?

If I cash the cheque, can any harm to the account I cash it into be done?

Thanks for the other thread link!

I bet this is a car loan I had with HBoS. I settled a loan early (as I sold the car as I inherited one) and they were really niggly about "full interest for term, cancellation fees etc etc) but I didn't follow up once paid off early as due to said inheritance, I was dealing with the death of a relative at the time and bigger things were in play!

I'll cash the cheque and give it 6 months for follow up. 50:50 to the hospice then and 50:50 to sibling for a 'meal beyond the grave'.

Edited to add to JulianPH. Nope, don't own a car these days. I do lease a car, but not in my name, through third party employer and the myriad of companies involved in fleet cars.

Give Lloyds a ring to their customer service number. But sounds like the same that happened to me as above.

Got through today.

Ia this an HPI claim sir?

No.

Sorry, is this a PPI claim sir?

No, you've sent me a cheque but I failed security when I tried to call you before.

Is the Issuing account name on the cheque "xxxx". Yes.

Did you have a HBoS account in branch but not online. Perhaps?

Well sir, it turns out we've charged people interest on their charges and defaults and we shouldn't have done that. We're really busy with HPI / PPI claims at the moment. It will take a few weeks to check your details if you think the cheque has been sent in error. If you think the cheque is legitimate you can cash it.

10/10.
