I don't understand tax at all.
I started a new job in July. My old employer didn't send me my P45 for a few weeks. My first pay was subject to emergency tax £344 instead of £136. I phoned HMRC and got a automatic message saying if it's a new job to wait until after five weeks.
Next pay day comes around and it's the same amount of tax. Bit annoying.
Phone them up and speak to someone who says it will be sorted for my September pay (im assuming ill just pay less tax or get a refund in that pay?).
I also have a second part time job, 12ish hours a week. This month I did a bit of over time and my take home pay was £550. However my tax was £140ish.
I'm a bit confused as to why my tax on my second job is the same as what it should be on my main job when the pay is completely different.
Can anyone explain?

On your first job you'll get your tax free allowance, around £12k, so you won't pay any tax on that. You'll pay 20% on anything over.
On your second job you don't get any tax free allowance so you'll pay 20% on everything.
