Yesterday anew bank card turned up for an account i don't have, today i have the pin and a welcome to your new account letter etc.

All in my name, correct address etc.

Phoned the bank in question and they said that this is called application fraud and that typically the fraudsters will try and intercept the mail and then apply for various cards, finance, loans etc.

So is that it?

should i be concerned in any way. My detail are all readily available as i am a director (powerful one too) of a local well known business. She said to check my credit file which i will do but i haven't had any other corrospondence of other applications which i am guessing i would have if people had been applying for finance in my name.

Haven't heard of this one before and tbh theres not even much online, more things about how people who work in banks can spot it etc.

No idea how to help with your situation but I am in a similar position but from a different approach.

I had my monthly credit score come through recently and I had got 7 credit checks against me by the bank of Scotland/ Halifax building society. 3 checks one day, 4 a few days later. The final one was for a mortgage.

I have got two mortgage, one BTL with a friend the other is the house I live in with my wife. Neither are with the above mentioned nor are they due for renewal any time soon so no checks should be done.

I have emailed the credit score company about it asking what I need to do about it but I’m yet to hear back and I have no idea whether i need to be worried or not!

I hope it gets sorted out for you.

That's pretty much it, someone managed to get your details from somewhere. From the training we get at work in the finance sector the fraudsters can get your name/dob from social media, address from street view and royal mail address finder. If your home address is on companies house, then the month and year of your birth is also on there.

From your side get yourself a credit check done and see if there's anything else that you may not know about.

If you apply for any credit in the meantime the bank/finance provide may up the KYC process to ensure they are dealing with the real you.

I think you should be very concerned. There is no material value for a fraudster in applying for a credit card they cannot physically intercept so there has to be another part to the fraud. The card application may just be to check the details pass scrutiny and can then be used for something else. I would get a credit check done asap.

Seems the scammers may be on a roll of late.

I had a TV Licence email that looked very convincing telling me my CC had expired - when I pay by DD

MrsT7 had a Txt saying her PAYG payment had failed, enter new details - when I pay by DD

Be on your toes always chaps...

For a start the Bank should have ip address of claimer. I would contact the police or action fraud and get it logged to be investigated at the very least and protect you incase of st happening.

I heard on Watchdog the other night that the bank cannot release any details of the fraudster as it contravenes his personal data protection rights. It's a mad world!

I have now managed to do a credit check, i could not get into experian no matter how many times i reset my password so i had to use another.

There have been several searches in the last few days, carphone warehouse, next , that type of thing.

It appears the new account was set up on the 8th, i am not sure how quickly they would have received the actual account numbers, if they have received them at all, like i say i got the bank card and following letter etc myself.

There also appears to be loads of searches earlier this year, i dont recognise these either. i am not sure if these are existing lenders or something else. the reason for these searches is given as 'associate' . i dont really know what that means.

A couple of the searches aren't even in my correct name, a similar name but not the correct one.

No new accounts are visible on the file, just searches, which are up to date including yesterday so id like to think any new actual agreement would be shown.

I dont really know what to do frown is it really a case of contacting every one of the companies who have carried out a search and saying it wasnt me?

If this scam relied on your post being intercepted it would point at a bent postman or other in the postal service. You then realise what a responsibility these people carry.

Not long ago of course there were big books sent round to everyone's houses with everyone's names, address and phone numbers in. They were called Telephone Directories. Now we are fearful of anyone knowing this info, which is indicative of the world of 'tech' we now inhabit, the rise of the 'scammer' and the side-effect of fear it has planted in us.

Experian allow you to (or used to) set a password on your file, so whenever credit is requested the company ask you for the password.

I have reset the password , question etc several times and each time it says that the password isn't valid which it would be as i just changed it so i do it all again (answering security questions etc, confirmation email ) and then it comes back password not valid. was starting to drive me insane tbh so used another one.

If this was me I would be requesting a protective registration notice with Experian, Equifax and Callcredit immediately.

I would do the same now, having been in the op’s position.

Op when you say you have reset the password , an account password is not a protective registration. I’d also contact the fraud departments of any banks that did credit searches I don’t recognise.

+1 for this - I had a similar experience a few years ago (suspect my details were gleaned from a Companies House listing), CIFAS listing ought to make it much harder/impossible to open additional accounts.

Although I think in my case I didn't have to pay, the bank(s) where the fraudulent applications were made registered me FOC.

I think that the bank yesterday may have registered me on this, the lady was very helpful and said she was taking my details to register on something which now sounds very similar to cifas. Is there anyway of checking im on it, the credit report doesn't show it.

If you have a letter box at the end of your drive, rather than a flap in your front door, the intercepting seems to be done by someone following round soon after the postman delivers and 'fishing' in the letter box to see what they can pull out.

It could be someone the OP knows, like a cleaner, family member etc as well as random.

That would seem to be a pretty major security fail. Either get the stuff posted through a little slot in the front door, or, if your drive is mile long with gates on, get a burglar-proof mailbox!

I would assume nothing, dangerous thing to do. Protective registration normally has a charge so unlikely a bank would do it for you.
