I can't find a thread on Pistonheads, if there is one feel free to point out my stupidity. Maybe it was years ago.

I'm 7 episodes into the BBC podcast (8 episodes) and I am gobsmacked that this scam, which is still being marketed, hasn't been in the media more.

yeh i’ve been listening to it.
On the first episode I could already sense that it was a ponzi scheme

Yes. I think the nearest comparison is Amway, which isn't a Ponzi but creates that cult atmosphere.

The manipulation of social media and the reach of the scam is staggering. The fact that it is still being propagated and apparently being run as a going concern is very worrying.

Very interesting podcast, been listening to it whilst on my travels .

Boggling stuff , very clever if it wasn’t so corrupt.

Excellent podcast. Never heard of one coin before. Love anything to do with financial crime.

I am sure it will go past 8 episodes judging on episode 8 or maybe a second season.

Just read the BBC website article; quite fascinating that people get drawn into schemes like this and drag others in with them, and when the big reveal occurs that it was all a scam thousands, probably millions of people, are left embarrassed and with nothing to show.

Would anyone on PH admit to being invested in this?

I know people who's friends/housemates tried to get them to 'invest'. Refusal did offend... such was the cult like behaviour. But nobody I know has admitted to putting money in.

I think the article that the BBC is publishing now, has a chart that shows the bulk of the 4bln EUR (2015-2017) came from China.

All the obvious red flags was present, unbelievable return on an dodgy 'investment', Ponzi sell scheme to friends / family, and topped off with a horde of greedy fools. Nothing new, but I am amazed at the audacious promotion undertaken by the scammers.

The 'One Coin' song in the first episode is bloody catchy!

I really wanted to enjoy this podcast but found the background music/sound effects really annoying so gave up after 10 minutes (never understand why producers do this); that said, I might go back to it as I find these massive scams fascinating. Swindled is a great podcast which deals with similar stuff.

The only way I can believe people still fall for this is that they know it's a scam but intend to get out earlier than the saps who get cleaned out.

Bitconnect was another one.

All of them have all the classic signs listed here - https://www.sec.gov/fast-answers/answersponzihtm.h...

Yet they still work. Incredible how greed can blind you to the most obvious stuff in the universe.

Ponzi schemes are almost mainstream economic policy in a lot of developing Europe and Africa, she won't turn up again, as soon as the brother is jailed it'll fall apart.

First time around, I thought, “That’s good - they got a choir in, how atmospheric!”

Binging all eight episodes in the car over 2 days though, it got real tired, real fast. Partly my fault for listening back-to-back.

Excellent series though.

Especially fascinating was the sheen of respectability she was able to accrue & trade upon through a Forbes ‘cover’ that was actually a paid-for advert, and a speaking gig at an Economist event they sponsored. Not really that surprising in this day & age I suppose, when everyone seems to be an Insta-millionaire and Managing Director of their own bedroom business.

You could not cash out - the 'investors' were promised that they would be able to exchange their tokens for OneCoins (which could be cashed out) but this kept getting pushed back. As a result every single penny & cent went to the people further up the tree - either as commission or as a big fat lump to presumably some East European organised crime syndicate at the top.

The unashamed greed on display was quite staggering. Some very arrogant individuals, who should probably be watching their backs rather than bragging about the money they've made - especially the ones in Africa. The Dutch guy stated that said he stopped promoting OneCoin when it was made clear it was a scam but is currently promoting another 'crypto currency' with similar credentials.

Didn't know that. If there were literally no payouts at all that makes them look even daffier.

The consequences for people who promote this stuff seem to be pitiful. Bitconnect had lots of asshole youtubers hyping and as far as I can tell only one or two are caught up in any type of comeback from it.

While many argue that this isn’t as secure as the classic blockchain, teams of talented individuals and thought-leaders have been working around the clock on ways to turn this concept into a usable, secure and highly scalable solution.
