With the IM thread being eaten up with an IFA at every turn it may be good for Derek C, Doublesix etc to start giving their fellow PH “colleagues” a more clearer understanding to how an IFA operates rather than downing and challenging every IM post.

Whilst it’s good to get an alternative view it’s turning into a IFA v IM thread and getting a bit boring.

So, how about all you well knowledgeable IFA,s that are posting regularly on the IM thread start giving us financially uneducated PH “friends” an insight into the IFA world.

What are your charges ?
Do you only recommend certain investment platforms ?
What are the difference between the platforms ?

You are missing the point entirely. Pop over to the DIY thread and ask questions there if you fancy.

Why am I missing the point ?
I am interested in how an IFA operates and maybe stupidly thought that going by all the posts by IFA’s they would be open to enlightening PH on how they operate.
Obviously not then ...........

Pretty much any IFA website would answer your questions.

I've posted loads on here before about how a financial planner operates. What do you think I haven't covered? Happy to bore you to tears on areas such as retirement planning which is surely what people want to know about (so they can ask the right questions if they are thinking of paying someone for this)?

BTW the only reason I get drawn into posting on products is when I see something out of the ordinary, such as "outperforming" something such as Vanguard Lifestrategy, which is notoriously difficult to do.

Fair question, and you'd hope/expect the answer would be "in exactly the same way as I'd advise a doppelganger client that walked into my office to invest".

Evidently you are all missing the point, because you asked a simple question in expectation of a simple answer from people who appear unable to do any such thing.

I would hate to work in an environment where I could not be open, clear and honest.

Derek - you also completely missed that the question was about what IFAs offer - not your DIY investor thread (which has nothing to do with financial advisers).

This is simply not true to any extent.

Which we compressively have with IM Index - and have been on par with IM Optimum. I take this as being a huge compliment, thank you!

You would hope/expect this...???!!!

You make no mention of where this magical land may be and confirm that you are not remotely sure that financial advisers do what they they recommend their clients do.

This was quite a simple question (as were the rest).

Nothing, until now
And I will not say another word on this thread, whilst advisers stop disrupting/attacking mine (just for the record Derek, I have never taken your comments as being an attack, I just know you will always disagree with me unless I agree with you! smile).

I really hope financial advisers can come together in supporting other PHers here and show their altruistic enthusiasm to impart their knowledge, experience and wisdom, rather than having a major snipe at anything that does not fit within their preconceptions.

To date this has not happened (it has all been about point scoring) and this is another reason I sponsored this forum with the IM Sticky. At least I put my money where my mouth is.

If everyone else could come together in the same way this would be brilliant for all! smile

I really didn't. If someone wants to know more about something that is a generic and valuable topic, such as choosing an adviser, I will spend my time answering it. I'll be open, clear and honest.

The questions that were posted will be different per firm and given how many firms are out there, isn't of any genuine value. I've never had a client ask about platforms. It's more likely to be "am I going to be OK".

This is beginning to get a little odd. I can only assume you are posting this with your tongue in cheek. Please feel free to be open, clear and honest and post up the ISINS, and duration of the index linked gilt fund (be careful with this smile). I'll ask someone independent (that people will have heard of on here) that knows what he is talking about to verify my comparisons. I can't say fairer than that.

JulianPH said:

I have no idea what other advisers do
All clients have different requirements

This is guff.

More guff

JulianPH said:

It hasn't. I think I've been remarkably restrained given my experience of the financial markets and (more importantly) the people that are magnitudes more intelligent than me that run the quant hedge funds whom I regularly chat to. I choose to keep those conversations to myself. Perhaps I need to be more open, clear and honest like DoubleSix smile

JulianPH said:

I give my time. For example to write a detailed post on index linked gilts. I'm open, clear and honest that I'm happy to do this.

Used to quite enjoy trying to decipher Ginge R's posts.

Incredibly complex use of language.

Haven't see him post for a while.

Hopefully he's ok, but just having a break from PH.

In the old days it was really really simple.

You just got sold whatever was in the salesman's best interests. And if you were lucky it worked.

Now it seems the mess involves no-one's best interests being served, which makes it worse than before. And it still seems to need luck to make it work.

It looks like he's had his hands full, but will hopefully return here in due course to build upon his not inconsiderable linguistic talents.

Spoke to Al a few times and shared a few laughs with him. Good bloke in my opinion. Straightforward and honest. I stuck a few quid in his ISA thing when it was going. Did ok (till the taxman grabbed it frown ).

Never discussed it with him but I don't think he could be arsed with all the bhing and so forth in this "wonderful community" of members.
