Spending prepaid Mastercards

I've got the option of taking a prepaid Mastercard from a reward scheme. They are loaded with a value eg £250 or £500.

Has anyone had one of these before? My question is if you wanted to buy something which costs more than the value of the card, what happens?

For online purchases I'd expect this not to work as I doubt an online checkout would cope with asking for a second card to process the amount over the prepaid limit. Using it in person might have more success but I never tried to split payment methods or cards before.

The last prepaid mastercard I had was used to link to my PayPal account, send my wife the amount on the card as a gift and then withdrawn to the bank.
No fees at all.

I have had a bunch of these, and had no problems splitting across multiple in restaurants. Never tried in a shop.

You can also buy gift cards on Amazon with the card.

Amazon vouchers are also available at the same point redemption levels so are an option if Amazon sell something you want.

You can also get loads of other stuff on the scheme but when you work it out, the best £ per point is Mastercard or Amazon. For instance, a Sony TV which is ~£500 online needs almost the same points as 3 x £250 Mastercards.

If you want something costing £600 and your prepaid card has £500 why not just add £100 to it?

I use a prepaid card for most online spending and most contactless spending. Also for my PayPal. The fewer places that I give my main bank ac or credit card details to the better.
