Hi Guys, pretty new to this forum so bear with me please. INSURANCE yes i know that this has been posted about 5,000+ times.

The thing is. Are there any new ways of getting cheaper insurance? I should mention that im 17 and the cheapest insurance quote i got was £2600 (with a black box😶) the thing is. I dont mind paying the £500 extra to get a better car (specifically bmw 1 series) but is there a way to get insurance on that cheaper?

I know that many of you will say, just get a smaller car. *But it doesnt work* i have tried looking at quotes for a aygo, yaris ,corsa and its all around the £2600 mark so i thought that its better to pay the few hundred extra but get a 1 series.

I guess im looking for any advice like try this insurance because its not on comparison sites or go t them directly, thank you for any help anything is appreciated

I should add. The car and insurance is paid out of my own pocket and no my parents arent adding anything to my expenses. Just wanted to let you guys know so j dont get hate like "stop wasting your parents' money"

Younger drivers buy small cars who think insurance works like that. Younger drivers crash their cars more often than other age groups therefore small cars cost young people a lot to insure.

Stay with me here.

Try looking at quotes for cars that aren't driven by young people. Something like a Rover 75, try both the 1.8t and the 1.9cdti.

I suggested this to my father who was looking to insure my 17 year old nephew on his second car (1.0 mitsubishi colt) he was getting quotes at around £1,700 with a black box.

I put in a quote for a Rover 75 1.8t petrol and it came out at £800 without black box.

Remember they're not bad cars! There's a lot of E39 BMW underneath the skin of them and they wear well for their age. Also they're cheap as chips to buy and run as no one wants to drive a Rover!!

Give it a go and see what you come back with.

Right, so i went to check insurance for both Rovers and the price is £3400 min for both. Meaning that its more expensive than a 1 series.

Have you tried adding older drivers?

A parent or someone else with a good driving record added to the policy might make a decent difference.

Yep. My dad has claims from when his van got burgled and when someone smashed into both his cars. Not cheapwr because of claims

My mum on the other hand had her driving license for 8 years but never had insurance in her name so the quote becomes more expensive than with just myself

Have you considered a classic car?

Of it's not what you're interested in it's not worth looking, but I insured my mini for about £500, compared with a normal car which was around twice that.

Also, try a few more random cars, some will just be less money! Hard to work out which I find, and some you may not want to drive...

When I was insuring a second car recently with zero no claims a fiat panda was cheaper by far. Ended up with a Clio which was about two thirds the insurance cost of a similar age/performance fiesta.

Put the insurance start date to be 2+ weeks in the future, if you're not already.

I think so too, there have been a few car robberies and loads of motorbike robberies (including mine) in my area so i can see why insurance is so high

I tried classic cars but no company wanted to insure me. They said that mostly classic car insurance starts from 18 and 21 years old

Is there still such a thing as PassPlus anymore ?

I did this just after I passed (Nov 2003 aged 17) and when I got my car (Jan 2004 aged 18), I saved about £300.

try altering the value of the car , higher value seems to bring it down a bit

The £3000 quote is with a £1600 car and i set the value to £8000 anything after that it was going up. So yeah it did bring it down because it was £3400 when i put it as £1600

Not quite, they will have an idea of the value of your car from either your registration number or the make/model you enter, that's how they put in a guide price for the vehicle. If you go more than a few percent either side of that the price will start to go up again!

When I was looking for my wifes x5 they put estimated value in at £19k which I left in for first quote, then dropped it to £14k (what I paid at the time for it) and the quote went up!

I'm really surprised by the Rover quote as my then 17 year old nephew's quote came out around £800. What postcode are you quoting for?

Another thing to consider is number of miles per year, again go too low and the price starts to go up again. 5-7000 tends to be the sweet spot price wise, but of course if you're expecting higher than that put in higher!

I dont want to share my postcode on here (even part of it)

I know for a fact that i would rather have more like 15k miles but im putting in 8k and i know i will have to drive the car less due to this. But it will save me alot of money that way. I will try to mess around and try to put 7k or 9k. Thanks

Try direct line, or other insurers that are not on the comparison sites.

My daughter has an Aygo, black box insurance is about £1150 for the year. Was the cheapest I could find. She's 18, 0 no claims, fresh licence, no named drivers, 9k miles a year.
