newbie question on tax self assessment
Discussion
Hi all, I'm a payee employee who needs to fill out a tax self assessment.
Last year we used an accountant for this, this year i'd like to try and do this myself. This is probably a stupid question, but would last year's "self assessment" be classes as a self assessment if it was done by a 3rd party (ie our accountant).
I seem to recall signing something that allowed our accountant to file the return on our behalf, do i need to tell the tax man that i'll be doing the assessment myself this year?
Thanks!

A Self Assessment tax return is a Self Assessment tax return, whether you complete it yopurself or make use of an agent (i.e. an accountant) to complete it for you.
No matter who completes it, HMRC ALWAYS regards the tax form as having been completed by the tax payer to whom the Self Assessment relates. And it is the taxpayer who is always liable for any errors, tax underpayments, interest or penalties arising.
I've just posted details of what can go wrong with people completing their own returns on the Jobs and Employment forum. Here's a link. It makes interesting reading.
