I'm looking to purchase for a long term hold UK listed shares in small amounts on monthly or maybe quarterly dates. Give the small amounts involved, transaction fees at Hargreaves etc become a significant cost percentage. Does anyone have experience of Freetrade or similar? The ability to hold in an ISA is preferred as well as proper UK FSA regulated outfit.

I think you get what you pay for with the cheap/free ones. Free trade is cheap, but doesn't offer anywhere near as many stocks and funds, or the research required IMO, as the more expensive offerings.

Just done a quick calc, and for 1 years ISA investment (20k) Free trade costs £36, while HL costs £90. Up to you if you think that 50 quid spent on a wider choice and better info offers value.

Sorry, for trades then yes might be cheaper. HL not the cheapest there. Iweb might be better value. Or if you know exactly what you want and they are available on freetrade might not be a bad idea.

Yes i'm just looking for pure trades (HL etc can cover my research needs). I'm only after big cap FTSE100 dividend stocks and Freetrade covers those. Just a little concerned that it looks like a flashy startup outfit with a poor backoffice operation (some of their website info is hosted in Google Docs!).

I use X- O Execution only( Jarvis), no set up fees when I opened my ISA. Each trade costs £5.95 buying or selling. Any minor problems been sorted on phone. Full trading on internet.

Halifax used to do a similar thing to what you describe called Sharebuilder with much lower charges than standard stock traders. The only catch is they invest on a timetable, not real time.

It looks as if Halifax have a "regular saver" option for most of their products, from £2 a trade.
