Strange car insurance fraud

Hi - Can anyone offer any help on this ?

My mother in law has just received two letters about a car insurance policy she hasn’t set up (letter has her name and part of her address but the car reg is not hers).

The first is from a fraud team at a company called MarkerStudy to say that some of her personal details have been used to set up a fraudulent motor insurance policy with the Markerstudy Group.

They say they have cancelled the policy.

The 2nd is from Swinton insurance to say her policy is cancelled. It says no money is owed as it was paid for via direct debit through Close Brothers Premium Finance. It then lists a refund of £259 from Zenith Insurance PLC.

This letter has the same car reg as the 1st letter but a different policy number, but maybe they are all related ?

Any ideas how this fraud works ? She can see no direct debit charges to her bank, but are there any other places she can check ?

It’s very common, I’m going to suggest that she lives in a nice low risk area.

Crims set up the policy using electoral roll data in order to get cheap insurance- car therefore shows as ‘insured’ so less likely to be stopped. That’s about as sophisticated as it is!

So is it likely that there was no financial fraud against her accounts as such ? Eg it’s just her name and address they used?

Yep, 100% with this one, it’s about insurance not financial fraud, although obviously would be worth keeping an eye on Equifax reports or similar to make sure nothing else is untoward/there’s no adverse information on her credit record...
