Heard a friend of a friend had married one of his female friends so she would receive his pension after he died. No idea what sort of pension, presumably occupational, and they don't live together.

Out of curiosity, is this scenario common, and are there any drawbacks, i.e. could they investigated and busted and she wouldn't receive anything after all?

It is not common, but it certainly does happen.

It also means property rights are transferable without any IHT being payable.

Now days pensions/SIPPs fall outside of you eatate when it comes to IHT though, so there is no need to marry just to protect against this anymore.

Ken Dodd 'married' his long time partner when he was on his death bed. He certainly didn't like paying tax and at the very end beat off HMRC which I'm sure gave him a good laugh. Whether his bed still had the suitcase full of cash under it is a different story............
