Anybody else watching the oil price in the last few hours? I wouldn’t want to be in any small cap oils tomorrow!!

Bloomberg printscreens showing it has gone negative.

Down from $15 just a few hours ago.

I'd love to see Nicola Sturgeon's face right now - here endeth the dream of Scottish independence.

A barrel of oil is probably cheaper than an empty barrel right now.

It's meaningless the contract expires tomorrow, look to forward contract price for a more realistic quote.

The Russians started the price war with the Saudis to kill American shale oil.
The Russian economy is of secondary importance to Putin.

I am tempted to buy into the Brent ETF tommorow

https://www.hl.co.uk/shares/shares-search-results/...

In about a year or so oil price will be higher.

Problem with ETF is that they lag the live market depending on the contracts they own.

Anyone with a better idea to get exposure to oil?

So I've been messing with a trading 212 practise account for the last few weeks. What's the crack with the dates on the oil markets? Is the May market likely to drop like today?

Just be careful, you’ll have to carry that position over several periods and you’ll erode on each roll (lose potentially $1-2/bbl each month). Not as great a trade as it looks...

This isn't for Brent, it's WTi.
There is no storage (or v little) and reduced demand so when contracts apply someone has to find a home for it.
The next month will be different (positive at least).

Brent is different and that is what most of the rest of the world refer to when they say 'price of oil'.

Guessing that those companies exposed to WTi will take a beating, but if you can hold on for a longer term, it could be considered a good time to buy. The Saudis will reduce output (or get opec+) to curb supply and in some time in the future, demand will increase (doubt to pre C19 levels), but more so than currently.

Betting on oil is dangerous. I was involved in summer 2008 and can party attribute that to why there is no nice car in my garage... 😳

It's not meaningless at all, it would only be meaningless if it happened like this every month, it doesn't.

June price is already lower and may repeat what we are seeing this month again on a repeat cycle because even with May cuts demand is currently far less than supply.

So I’m a financial moron. There must be a way to make money from the current situation. So if I have a small amount to invest say £1k how would I turn this to my advantage?
