Best share buying platform
Discussion
Hargreaves Lansdown are good for shares (though expensive for funds) and have a good reputation for customer service.
There are lots of others to look at so shop around and see which best suits you and your trading style, as each platform is different to the next.

Julian, would you suggest HL as the best platform for shares trading with a S&S ISA too? Or purely share dealing out of an ISA?
HL are good for buy and hold or frequent trades with reasonable sums where their fees are offset. If you're doing £500 here and there they're expensive for that kind of thing.

Thanks all, plenty to read through there.
Atm, I will be chucking in £200-250 here and there, more speculative than anything. As of March '21, then I'll be looking at putting c.£700 pcm into a scheme so will need to look at other, longer term solutions at that point.
Thanks
In that case DEGIRO may be a good starting point for you.Atm, I will be chucking in £200-250 here and there, more speculative than anything. As of March '21, then I'll be looking at putting c.£700 pcm into a scheme so will need to look at other, longer term solutions at that point.

Brilliant, thanks Julian Last time I used them it had to be via bank transfer and took a day or two to show up.
Not necessarily an issue but can put paid to some impulsive thoughts

I am investing between £500 and £1k a time and have just moved to Trading 212 due to a lack of fees.
HL is a good platform but its £23.90 a time to buy and then sell the shares which at a lower investment value dilutes any potential return quite a lot.
I can PM you a link to join if you wish (we both get a free share)

If you plan to be a buy and long-term hold investor (aka Warren Buffett) you can still do it the old fashioned way with share certificates.
After purchase you pay no fees at all. Jarvis, Tunbridge Wells have fairly cheap purchase charges.
Dividends will come directly to you and all corporate documents, because you will be listed on the share register.
However you also need a stock and shares ISA, otherwise if you are successful, CGT will become a problem.
Choose a provider which has a limit cap on annual fees, otherwise as your fund grows they 'sting' you.
I have one ISA with nil fees, but am told it is a legacy product, no longer available to new customers.
Maybe you can find one of those somewhere. Let me know if so, I need an additional ISA provider.

Obviously dealing charges are on top of this.

I use Jarvis xo. No ongoing fees, just £5.95 per trade.
Do bear in mind this is as barebones a service as you can get. If you're looking for a platform to educate you and give insights into the markets etc, look elsewhere.
I use the ADVFN app to keep an eye on the market, and the Investigate website to read relevant stock news,

Has anyone got any experience of the newer app-based share dealing platforms like Freetrade or Trading212? They don’t charge commission to buy/sell.
Being discussed a lot over in the other thread. A lot of us are using it. I found HL very expensive to buy and sell shares through. A lot more expensive that 212.

I would say HL. Very easy to use.
As someone said a little expensive on funds but ok on shares and fantastically friendly easy to use website
