30 million new unemployed people in America over the last month or so will have a lot to do with it.

The Vanguard lifestrategy account I opened two months ago had gone back to being worth 3.5% less than I paid in and I was getting very tempted to cash out. I could see no basis for the recovery over the last few weeks with all the doom and gloom recession stories but just went with it.

I think this is all going to fall hard.

Trump pumping his gums about China and tariffs.

It's not off that much though.

Investing probably isn’t for you if you can’t stomach a 3.5% fall.

The point of LS is long term growth. I think you’re confused about the purpose and target of the fund.

Oh it was down around 20% at one point, I am amazed it is only down 3.5% today.

I'm up 1.5% overall, technology fund at 26% up whilst all others are down, seems to be carrying me!

Joined Vanguard at a similar time to you and I think a 3.5% fall ain’t that bad! If you’re adding in extra funds monthly then think of all the cheap units you’re picking up.

Figures no use without time frame; I was referring to the last 1-2 days!

I think the point still stands though.

In times like these 3.5% over a couple of days is nothing.

People quickly forget 11% in a day.

hehe

Yep, I cashed in my funds at beginning of all this then re-bought (tech funds) - and quite a lot up.

I'm amazed it went back up again - the markets seemed to be defying logic.

Well that is true. 'Kick and rush' would be more appropriate.

+1
Been investing in the VLS 100 for a couple of years, was -27% a few weeks back so threw another lump in, reminded myself about the long haul game and that was that. Did I time it perfectly at the bottom, no chance but trying to time the market is nigh impossible anyway as the big boys in the market will always be quicker than you and have a better view before you can even react! I still lowered my average so IL take that for now.

While the boys in the front line buy and sell instantly by pressing a button, I remember one of my investment providers once saying 'Ah yes sir, we'll send you a form...' spin

If I read it right, the current position for Joe Punter is about 30 mins for shares and 24 hours for funds as they're traded daily (but stand to be corrected).

You want to cash out as it has fallen 3.5pc in 2m?
Or you want to cash out as you believe it has further to fall?

If the latter, then it makes sense and go back in when it hits the bottom.
If the former, then you might need to reappraise the long part of long term strategy...

Not forgetting: if the latter, don’t forget to let us know when “the bottom” is here hehe

I was down - 30 with VG when this all kicked off. Yesterday I was down just -3.5. I’ve just put it all back into cash and waiting. I see no evidence that things will be improving even if they slowly open retail back up and so I just see it collapsing again but harder than last time.

This is from someone who has no experience in any of this 😆

Why would it be 30 minutes for average punters? I bought yesterday and it was the same as usual. Press buy, current price is displayed, which you get a few seconds to accept or reject. Accept and the deal is done.

Funds have always been about 24 hours (certainly while I've been buying them). As you say it's because they trade daily and they may need to liquidate stock etc.

Nope with market tradable products (shares, investment trusts, ETFs, maybe some others that I've never touched) they're priced instantly and you can buy or sell instantly.

Funds (OEICs) usually deal daily and there's usually a cut-off point for getting the order in both to them and on your platform.
