Using my first post (though I've 'lurked' for a while) to ask the collective wisdom of the forum for advice on something that's way outside my experience.

My wife and I have some savings in an Aviva ISA wrap - this is currently with a local Financial Adviser and has been for some years - we pay an annual 'ongoing advice fee' of 1%. We are entirely happy with the Aviva end of things (regular statements and online info between times) but have never received any meaningful advice from the FA and really can't see the value in the charge - my question is; can we leave the Aviva investments in place and simply stop paying the FA the 'ongoing advice fee'?

If this is something we'd be able to do, where would we start, with the Financial Adviser or with Aviva?

I would call Aviva and ask if they can deal direct (ie without an IFA in the middle). If they can, simply write to Aviva informing them that the IFA is no longer acting for you, to stop paying all commission/fees to him, and to deal with you in future. If you have two stamps, you can write to the IFA and inform him that his services are no longer required. He may say 'yeah whatever' or he may get grumpy, but it is your decision and your money, not his.

It will be a good chance to find out what other costs and charges are associated with the investment.
