I was sold a car by a main dealer specifically for towing a caravan, long discussion on towing weights and tow bar fitting. Long story short when got home found out the car could not have a tow bar ( no bars approved for car ).
Returned the car same day , dealer was tardy repaying my cash after many calls and personal visit I was refunded twice which they promptly asked for over payment which I did immediately. Deducting the cost of the road tax and the fuel and small charge for my time and expenses. They are now demanding I repay the costs I incurred.
Should I capitulate or should I be insistence the cover my cost, because I was sold a car not fit for the the purpose I needed despite asking about tow bar fitting at the time of sale.

You can get a refund on some of the tax presumably and no I wouldnt say you could make any deduction. However annoying it may be.

Morally, you give it back. Legally, you give it back.

However, given they gave it to you, accidentally, and you have a genuine grievance, I would weigh up the chances of them going for a Moneyclaim for one months tax, the fuel and the drink you took for your trouble. I wouldn't be tempted to go back there though.

Did you buy the car and take it home the same day you walked in and had the discussions? If not, what stopped you checking suitability before collection?

Email the Dealer Principal explaining your position, it may not have escalated to that level, otherwise contact the brands customer service department.
By the time it gets to that level they’ll probably roll over. To confirm though, you’re currently in the wrong.

I think deducting 1 month of road tax and fuel, so long as accompanied by a receipt would be fair. Anything else, not so

As mentioned, speak to DP, hopefully they will see sense. If not and they threaten with Moneyclaim then you have a decision to make

It sounds like such a paltry amount that I would hope with a sensible conversation it should just go away
