End of phone contract

My 2 year contract with Vodafone ends on 11th Jan 2021. I’ve decided there’s no reason to upgrade from my iPhone XS Max (which still has 89% battery capacity and runs mostly fine). I no longer want to pay £55 a month for unlimited data which I don’t use. I want to go down to SIM only and pay £10-£20 a month for 5-10GB data.
Do I need to be ringing Vodafone now (less than 30 days before the end of contract), or wait until 11th Jan?

Yeah that’s what mine did. You had to wait until the date it told you in the app Have a look online see what EE have for offer and take a couple of pounds off what you see online, if you’re not up for bending the truth call EE and see what’s the best deal they can do for you. I would then call Vodafone and say you are thinking of leaving and can you get a PUK code to keep your same number.
They will probably say you can’t get it until your contract is up blah blah. Then say you have a great deal from EE.
They should offer you a better SIM only deal or at least lock something in that changes over when contract is up.
I have been doing this for years, always buy my iPhones outright or on Apple 0% finance. Never paid more than £12 a month in 5 years.
Current plan is with Vodafone 5G capability as it was the same price as 4G, 5GB data unlimited everything else for £9.80 a month.
In the past I could have got a bit cheaper if I had hopped around but getting a PUK code to keep number is a ball ache plus changing SIM card etc.

I changed my missus from O2 who had fleeced her for 18 months on a iphone contract that had finished. She didnt want a new phone so saved her £25pm and even she said it was easy to swap. Both my kids are pay monthly with IDmobile 8gb for £8.If you cant change it in the app, call them in last 30 days saying you want PUK(phone unlock) and PAC(take number to new network), they will be desperate to keep you on another contract! You might pay a bit more to stay on a 12 month sim only deal with vodafone compared to swapping providers but only you can decide if saving v hassle/service is worth it

The complete opposite. It couldn’t be easier. Vodafone give you the date you can upgrade or change within the app.
Also on that date you are able to search 3rd party websites and get their upgrade offers. Just moved to sim only remaining on Vodafone through carphonewarehouse.
£16 a month, 12 month contract, 100gb data.

You shouldn't need to speak to Vodafone if you switch to another provider.Text them for a PAC number.
Text PAC followed by your 4 character PIN to 65075. (When I did it I didn't need to add the pin number - I just texted the word PAC)
You'll get a PAC number returned to you.
Just give that to the new provider and they handle the transfer for you.
Once you've asked for a PAC number you may get a call from Vodafone retentions people.
The text process will only work if you have a single phone number on your Vodafone account - if you have multiple numbers then I believe you need to call them.
