Any suggestions for managing portfolios of around 40 companies, a mixture of safe and high risk.

Just curious what others use, other than google sheets?

I am trying to find a way out of watching charts & news continuously, with some method of automation, either that or I am going to cut back a bit.

Thanks

Yahoo Finance seems ok. I tried it out just a day ago and it seems quite useful. I can link my broker to it and see my portfolio as a watchlist. You can customize the columns. And it has some stock news as well.
There are probably other similar sites.

Stocktwits is worth a look for stock sentiment.

Agreed, been getting carried away. What's a sensible number for most people to handle?

Bloomberg is great but prohibitively expensive on a PA basis so I’d either find a system that can offer you really good alerts (news/technicals/your levels etc) or cut back what you’re watching to a level you are happy.

Edited to add, apols that’s not more useful.

No such thing as 'safe' imho,I cut back considerably towards end of last year,I put money into mostly high risk AIM so might have different view, current pf at 6 stocks, aiming to gain not maintain so would rather have money focused on a few, that are easily kept an eye on
Reckon 10 would be max for me

yes same as TCX, I'm up to 11 now though mad

I think 6-8 was about optimum for me to play about a bit and I could see on phone screen in one hit without scrolling. Otherwise I start losing track.

Setting alerts on price or automatic buy and sells helps/helped a bit.

I have just over 20 but 15 are long term holds no matter what so I barely look at them. The others I keep an eye on but I don't have anything I wont keep longterm anyway.

I am old school and still happily use MS Money on Windows for the more formal elements, and supported by online 'dummy' portfolios.

I use 'my stocks portfolio', a free app on my phone. Works really well, everything you need in one place - other than ability to buy/sell.

A portfolio comprising only 10 stocks?

"Studies and mathematical models have shown that maintaining a well-diversified portfolio of 25 to 30 stocks yields the most cost-effective level of risk reduction." - Investopedia https://www.investopedia.com/terms/d/diversificati...

And how do you sensibly cover international markets at such low numbers?

I'd be inclined to think that for an individual a well monitored 10 stock portfolio is likely to perform better than a poorly maintained 30. Realistically how many could one person look after if it's not their day job?

Just going off my own experience, money from upto 20 different stocks focused into 4 end of last year vastly increased pf profit
Same way Royal London made me square root of feck all in pension held by them, but transferred to sipp has seen 100% rise in less than a year
God didn't invent them, people who want their cut/churn/ commission did
For the individual investor interested on growing account id say focus to gain, diversify to maintain,if you pick the right firms to focus on you'll far out run the diversified pf how many really great stocks in a lifetime does Buffet reckon?

Might be a daft question but I assume this thread is talking about trading rather than long term buy and hold investments?

Yes correct, I am day trading more these days, covid has given me a lot of time but I am building up a lot of small accounts to manage, it can do you head in if not careful.

I am happy to gamble small amounts (hundreds) on penny stocks, but many platforms I have used have limited market access.

I am thinking of trying Interactive Brokers, appreciate any views on this platform if anyone is using?

Bit of a hollow statement. You have the potential to outperform because you would be taking on masses of risk in a concentrated position. You can still diversify a high risk portfolio.
