T212 HL ?? Who else?
Discussion
looking for recommendations for a shares platform from those already using them. Not looking to invest massive amounts, just a fun account to throw some spare cash at and maybe earn a few quid in the process. I know about T212 and HL etc but what are you guys using. Been having a trawl through the biggest gamble thread and it's always been something I wouldn't mind having a dabble at.
Depends on volumes.
HL are pretty expensive but I'd trust them with six figures.
Trading212 and Degiro type places are dead cheap but I wouldn't.
Likewise dealing charges matter as if you're only buying £100 of something a dealing fee of £2 v £10 matters much more than it does on £2000.

I know what you mean about not trusting T212 with as large an amount as HL. I feel the same, but not really sure why. (Maybe it just feels a bit Mickey mouse because it's a phone app)HL are pretty expensive but I'd trust them with six figures.

I use T212 and always found them very good, and I'm sure they would have to meet the same kind of standards as HL.

Very good platform and appEFH189 said:
I used to be exclusively on IG, and had around £60k in a spread betting account at one point. I am getting more and more fed up with it now though, for spreadbetting, as they seem to be refusing to open certain positions, which is very annoying. This isn’t on the likes of GME or AMC, these are U.K. listed entities I am wanting to long or short.
Ultimately they will be reflecting issues in the underlying market as they have a very efficient automated fallback set up for their book that seemlessly puts unwanted flow into a dark pool and then the exchange. The other advantage is that in 50 years they've not had the SFO or anyone raid them and probably won't, so you won't be sitting there for months with your money tied up and waiting for the old drunk put in by the regulator to sort out who's money goes where and when.

I'm in a similar situation to OP, looking for a share dealing platform.
Used to be with HL years back, nice with all the bells and whistles but never really utilised a lot of it.
Currently have a LISA with AJ Bell so tempted to use them.
Can T212 be used to purchase both funds and shares or shares only?

To be fair, there are many more $100 gambling accounts than the type of investment customer drawn to HL. And there has been a gambling explosion during lockdown while simultaneously a large loss of sporting events so a very abnormal amount of gambling has found its way into the financial markets. The nature of this type of customer is also that they will gravitate to a product that says it is free, despite there obviously being charges but they aren't explicitly declared to the consumer.
The reality is that consumers focus on the headline charges but with financial services you must always focus on the service, what you need and who delivers it. As recently learned by many new market participants just in the last couple of weeks as they learned of the somenof the true costs of free services and that for some it's a high charge.
I think it would be fair to say that on no real metric would a firm like HL be in the same comparison chart as the comm free firms as they are arguably at the opposite ends of the spectrum and designed for completely different customer types.

Nobody mentioned iweb yet?
I like their simple flat £5 a trade fee and no annual fee. It's pretty user friendly and seems to have most instruments.
As a fairly unsophisticated investor who tends to buy and leave but also has the odd flutter I find it about right.
It was £25 sign up fee when I joined which looks like it has gone up to £100 now which is a bit steep, but annual fees and £10+ trades could soon add up to more.
