Maths question

Hi, I am having a brain fog moment with a maths question so bear with me please.

I have a range of numbers beginning with smallest number X and ending at largest number Y. All I know is that 70% of the range is Z. To make it clear 0% of range is X and 100% of range is Y.

For arguments sake let's say 70% of range (number Z) is 1200. Based on this can I work out X and Y?

I don't think so. You need either X or Y to work out the other end of the range.

Would it not mean 1714.29 is the top number (100%)
1200 middle (70%)
0 bottom (0%)

Well if 1200 = 70%
then 100% = 1200/.7 = 840.

But only if x is zero.

Or is the graph a gain from x starting at 0%.

X and Y are both numbers.

It's like saying 'the average of two numbers is 150'. You can't work them out unless you know one of them.
