Credit Card fraud
Discussion
Noticed some interest charged on my credit card today. There shouldn't have been any. I only use the card as a balance transfer card and have never spent on it.
I looked at my transactions and just over a month ago someone had spent on it at amazon. Called Halifax and they have refunded straight away which is great but left me wondering how someone would have got the details to the card? It's never left the house and never been used. Very odd,
Any ideas?

My card has also been cloned and it never leaves the house. I only buy from Amazon and places like Screwfix and whoever I insure with. I don't just key the details into any old website. It was used at a large wholesalers online, which went through. It was used later at the same wholesalers but declined that time. The card company have refunded the wholesalers transaction and sent me a new card.
I just cannot see any of the sites I use being compromised as I am sure that would make the news (unless that is yet to come), so how did the cloners get the details?

Had any builders in lately!
Something similar happened to someone i knew and the card he kept in a drawer for emergencies. It had never been used, so certainly the details weren't stored anywhere but with the bank.
Had some building work on his house, shortly afterwards a number of items were bought on the card to an address in the same city.

Do you still get paper statements from Halifax?
My HF card details got used for some random transaction in the US a few weeks after HF had a load of issues sending out statements. They never admitted it but I’m sure they had a breach at their end as I hardly ever used that card. Refunded and new card issued but they cranked up the fraud detection on it to the point it became useless as every other transaction was getting blocked. I’ve since moved on to another provider and gone paperless.

Thats interesting, in my mind thats what I think had happened. As I said, I've never used the card at all. To use it though dont they have to have the 3 digits on the back of the card? Those are obviously not on the statement. My HF card details got used for some random transaction in the US a few weeks after HF had a load of issues sending out statements. It’s reckoned a lot of them are leaked / stolen from processing centres abroad.
I had one card cloned three times (three separate groups of events) a few years ago. Switched to other cards and never had any further issues.
OP’s case is a bit odd if the card was only used for one transaction.

Just needs card number and expiry. Most merchants validate the CVV as well to reduce the chance of fraud (and not getting payment) but they don’t have to. Amazon doesn’t!Some also fail to stop brute force attacks and with 3 digits they can guess in 500 attempts on average. Note that Amex use 4 digit codes unlike Mastercard and Visa.

I've had the card over a year, seems odd that now it gets used.
I've never had it on a personal credit card but it did happen a few times on a company credit card, a few work colleagues had similar issues. Barclaycard always removed the fraudulent transactions no fuss.
The Company card was mostly used for fuel so put it down to dodgy petrol stations.

I've had my rbs card un-scammed for a couple of years now which is a record, at one point I couldn't seem to go a few months without scam activity.I had one card cloned three times (three separate groups of events) a few years ago. Switched to other cards and never had any further issues.

And for anyone about to question my usage, one (replacement for scammed card) was even scammed while it was still sealed in its envelope on the hallway sideboard before I'd had a chance to open or use it!

Mine was a card operated by HSBC. One time it was used to buy a flight and foreign currency from a bank! And for anyone about to question my usage, one (replacement for scammed card) was even scammed while it was still sealed in its envelope on the hallway sideboard before I'd had a chance to open or use it!
I recall HSBC's attitude each time was they absolutely couldn't give a toss - not in nasty way, just a 'oh, it's absolutely fine, don't worry about it' kind of way.
No query about where I might have used the card, how it could have happened etc. It was like they knew full well what had happened.

Scammers do this is bulk, odds are they guess right sometimes. A small test transaction can be done and when it works they can then try something big or sell the details on as they are worth more once tried and tested.
Lots of info on such scams from Brian Krebs
