No previous experience - good ballpark for Solicitor fee?

Hi all
Am currently in the process of buying a new home (a new build) and the Housebuilder has been quite noticeably trying to steer me in the direction of using their recommended Mortgage broker and their recommended Solicitor (I suspect because of reciprocal kickbacks etc). I don't have any previous moving experience to draw comparisons with though.
Sorted my own Mortgage but haven't appointed a solicitor yet. This will be a straight purchase only (no selling of my existing property required and obvs no chain as new build).
The Housebuilder's recommended outfit are quoting a fixed price of £1400. This seems steep to me.
Checked with a couple of mates who purchased in the last few years (admittedly pre-covid) and they were both charged around £800-850 all in.
Does that sound like the ballpark I should shop around for? Don't know if the location is relevant but I'm in Devon.

You need to ensure any quote comparisons are like for like.
£1400 sounds high but does it include everything?
I'd expect most to charge circa £600-£700+vat for their services and then circa £300 for searches and then whatever else is needed (TT Fee, bankruptcy searches, Electronic ID check, Leasehold fee, HTB ISA fee etc etc).
We have a solicitor that looks after lots of our PH'er clients, I would guesstimate her fees would be about £1200-£1300........so, £1,400 does fell toppy.
Anyway, no matter what the price DO NOT use the mortgage person or solicitor offered to you by the people selling you the property. Use ANYONE but the people in bed with your seller and their agent.............
