My MIL is thinking of moving to the UK from Switzerland to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. However she is quite elderly. Her assets are principally a flat in Switzerland yet little cash.

She would like to be able to pass this on to her daughter.

Does anyone know if she moves here for a couple of years what the implications are for IHT of the worst were to happen

a) when resident here
b) soon after moving back to Switzerland?

Thanks!

Inheritance tax is based on domicile, which is very difficult to change, and almost impossible in the short-term. One to speak with a good solicitor about. I had a similar set of circumstances with a relative and in the end we used a Trust to protect everyone from tax.
