Hello, perhaps someone could help my understanding here.

My employer issues a 20-21 P11D to me in May. This only has my private medical figure on it, nothing else.

When I complete my self assessment, there is usually an amount outstanding to pay to HMRC, which suspiciously looks to about there or thereabouts 40% of the figure of the private healthcare.

Having had private medical reported in the same way on my P11D before and everything balancing out, it seems odd that I have to retrospectively pay the tax.

Or is that exactly the point of reporting these benefits in kind on the P11D, i declare them and pay the tax?

Thanks for any help!

Have you checked your tax code via the HMRC web site?

I have zero faith in my employer’s payroll contractor and always check it over myself and make the adjustments required.

Normally the HMRC would adjust your future tax code on the assumption that your P11D benefits will continue.

interesting - thanks for the quick replies.

I did ring HMRC this year to declare my salary figures, I asked about the medical value on the P11D and the agent said something along the lines of 'not to worry, its handled in a different way'.

So shrug. Lucklily the amount is below the 3k limit before you have to pay outright, so i can either pay or have it collected in my code.

When I've been in this situation, my tax code has been adjusted by the value of the medical insurance.
This has been my experience also. Although less useful since I moved to a role with a greater element of variable commission, as now HMRC seem incapable of letting more than a couple of months go by without wildly changing my tax code rolleyes

It all seems to come out in the wash though.
