Does anyone know anything about mergers and acquisitions? I have been approached by a company in New York and my natural scepticism makes me smell rather a large rat.

I suppose the 1st question is, do you have something worth merging or acquiring, and 2nd question, what is the credibility of the New York company.

It's all about context, years ago when my business was bigger, we did get enquiries however being a boring manufacturer, they were mostly opportunistic ,hoping we were in dire straits. After the 2nd or 3rd, the excitement and mystique worth off.

If you're in a happening industry, it could be for real but I'd advise cautious optimism.

I've been on both sides and am happy to offer advice. M&A's can be a great opportunity but which one are they approaching you for?

This is the ‘company’ that contacted me. It has ‘boiler room’ written all over it.

Every credible US investment website I have ever looked at, shouts the credentials, the list each partner with a bio ( usually their law or business degree and where they did their MBA), all these facts I assume are easily verifiable.
I see in the News section, lots of mention of JP Morgan and David Tepper.
I doubt over David Tepper's website there's much mention of McMill International Securities LLC
No mention of SEC compliance.
Never sure what the angle is though, whether it's to use a business to scam others or a direct scam but if you are in the market for a merger, plenty of local companies who could assist.

That quote is laughably terrible

OP - I wouldn't be going anywhere near this. It may be flattering, but if you're genuinely looking to sell or merge, I'd approach someone in the UK with industry experience to get you going

This thread should be on the Business forum not Finance.

Agreed, there's a lot of buzz words and no content. They may be acting on a more credible firm's behalf but I would ignore it.

Very confusing thread... You start talking about M+A, then say you don't have a business and the company are actually looking to buy something you don't have in a company which went private 3 months ago?!

Actually reminds me of a couple of people I've met over the years. Just spout a bunch of what they deem to be 'business' words with no context or able to articulate the point whatsoever

Possibly because they are actually based in Lagos, Nigeria or Moscow, Russia ( see how I americanized it by adding the country to the city) or even Birmingham, England

Sorry Condi. I’m not a bread head. Should have made it clear in the first instance. The two people who have spoken to me have distinctly Hispanic accents. My only intention now is to waste as much of their time as possible.

They say they are in White Plains, which is a couple of hours from me. It's tempting to take a drive up there but my time is more valuable smile

In which case surely you have a large amount of equity to offer and wish to start doing DD on them... Ask them to send over as much information as possible biggrin Should take them a few hours...
