International money transfer

Perhaps one of you has done something similar...

Need to send an inheritance to a relative in Canada. Ordinarily i would just go into my bank and arrange it from there, however they are whinging that the fees are too expensive...

Are there any other options available that don't involve someone like Western Union (that I expect she will suggest), as I'm not prepared to risk that money getting lost!

Obviously not something I would routinely do, are they other options that work!

When I did this a few years ago to Canada and NZ for large amounts, I used tranzfers.com who have now become ofx.com

Worked without any problems - tried a small transfer first in both cases.

Ended up as about 0.4% more dosh than the banks when received at the other end.

Have a look at Moneycorp, their rates are normally better than high street banks.

There's nothing wrong with Western Union. I use it quite a lot for business and it is generally super efficient.

Having said that, for more than a small transfer, I'd be using wise (used to be TransferWise). I am yet to find anyone that offer a better rate or better service.

Done a few recently, OFX and Fx.com but most recent, after recommendations from here, found Wise to be really good, very quick and gave the best results regarding what was received at the other end. When entering the amount it works out the rate, which was way better than the others, and minus the fee ( think it was £4 per thousand) and gives a total. That total was received at the other end within minutes of transferring funds too Wise.

Still prefer to transfer via a bank, not like i'll be paying those charges !

I thought the same myself and would have preferred to go bank to bank transfer but after going to two of my banks and they were next to hopeless in answering my queries. Firstly they wouldn't tell me the rate of exchange until it had been completed and their charges were way more than Wise. I asked this same question on here and got good advice by going with a transfer company and steering clear of banks who just want to have your trousers down. Wise seemed to be the one most recommended and were indeed very good and will definitely use them again.
