Arrived from the Barclays (Barclaycard) this afternoon: “Paying with contactless is fast and easy – and from today, it’ll be even more convenient for shoppers across the UK. The limit for contactless payments is going up from £45 to £100, so you can now pay for a weekly shop or car fuel with just a tap.”

About the time, I’d say.

I struggle to fill up a small tank with the lower limit, wasn’t an issue last year. frown

It's be much easier, Barclaycard, if you'd support Google Pay, rather than only your own fkwit app.

Downside to this being that pickpockets and the like will be rubbing their hands with glee knowing they are in for a bigger payday with stolen cards

I presume the banks have done their maths before proceeding.

Will it encourage people to spend more? Because if it was over the previous limit you just put the card in and enterered your PIN, not that difficult. If it was an anti-Covid measure, that time is largely past. So what is the motive I wonder?

My Barclaycard is the payment card I use for Apple Pay. Does Google Pay not work in the same way?

From a consumer point of view, you're protected.

From a criminal view, there's so many cameras these days at retail that you're going to be caught on camera soon enough.

Apple doesn't let them handle payments outside of the Apple Pay infrastructure. Android does... so they do. It would be ok if the app wasn't st.

Back in 2019, I was in Ralph's Coffee & Bar on Regent St for a quick 'coffee' break whilst shopping.
I was expecting to need to enter my pin when the bill arrived but they had a contactless limit of £75.
I paid with an American Express card, perhaps they had a tie-up?

My Barclaycard isn't compatible with the Barclaycard app.

A few years ago my card was nicked out of my car. It was used to spend about a tenner at 2 shops about half a mile from my house half an hour after the offence, and within 10 mins of the second purchase the banks fraud dept were calling me.

Based on that, their detection systems are unbelievably good

Why anyone wouldn't just start using a card that is fine with Apple pay I have no idea. Paid for some work on my car yesterday, £1250 on my phone. There is simply no need for a wallet in 99% of cases these days, with apple/google pay.

Until you pop into a coffee shop that is cash only and you don’t realise until you have eaten that cake! Oops.

But yes this is great for Apple Pay bad news for having your card stolen although your watch / phone is probably still more valuable to the crims.

Pretty rare these days to find cash only I find. But I do live in a city.

And to the latter, I'd rather lose a phone than have lost a wallet when wallets were a thing. New phone can be here within the week and cards all re-added, obviously impossible to use the cards on the phone if you can't get into it.

Hopefully pay at pump’s will be upgraded at some point to accept contactless. It’s pretty much the only thing I still have to enter a PIN for these days!

Still no need for more than your phone even if you need cash.

You are able to through your banks app.

Lol caught on camera. Good one. Iv personally had a man grab a bag of messages, including alchohol, cigarettes and more, assault a staff member and leave the premises with 8 cameras in store and outside. Guess what? Sorry can't ID him. Nothing more they can do.

I'm in Scotland where masks are mandatory btw but again shows the complete uselessness of a camera.

Then that's probably the worst camera installation known to human kind.

That’s what I ended up doing. We are almost a cashless society.

Still prefer the security of the phone over £100 tap and go with the card. I send the kids to pay with a card at cafes they won’t know what folding money if when they grow up.

They simply cannot ID someone wearing those mask/scarf things they pull up to just below the eyes and a nice cap. You can put as many cameras as you please and it won't get them. Its also a 4k swann install so I highly doubt its the worst ever.

It is highly likely that each person walking around (adult) has 1 bank card on them and I suspect many have 203 - so for a mugger, a lot of people possibly have £300 worth of contactless on them - whereas before mugging people for cash was much higher rate of potluck.
