Ive just contacted Admiral who i have a multi car policy with to change an x3 to a new x5 hybrid. Its an Indian call centre where the line is breaking up. I tried using the app which gave a quote and was really quite simple but because im transferring the plate said i had to ring.

45 minutes later and they want to know every option even down to the rubber mats. So i had to explain every option on the car.

Surely this is an error on their side if its a uk spec vehicle without any after market options and im giving them the cost of the car?

He’s ringing me back as he has to put it all into the system before i get a new quote.

Is this true as ive never done it in 25 years of driving.

Thx

I had the same issues when adding my Wife’s X4 last month. Absolute nightmare! Cheap though.

I have multi-car discounts with Direct Line. They don’t do a multi-car policy as such. Been with them for years, including home/travel insurance.

When the occasional claim has been required they have been great. Excellent customer service and reasonable prices too.

They are not included in the comparison sites so you have to do direct.

Technology designed to make things simpler very often makes them more complex.

I found Direct Line the best of the bunch up to an XKR, but the DB9 was slightly out of their comfort zone so I moved to a specialist.

DL been fine in the last year with a new FFRR and a nearly new M5 Comp. I guess it’s when the valuation exceeds a certain value they become uncomfortable.

It turned into a comical mess. I honestly had to explain to them what acoustic glass was and what a rubber boot
liner is. They were adamant I had to declare each optional extra fitted to the car until I then said I’m going to cancel all the policies and make a complaint, as well as saying I’ve posted this on a forum. At that point he went off and came back asking me to say that they were standard options. I was then in a position that he was trying to coerce me to say they were standard uk spec options so the original quote would stand, but by then I was obliged to say I can’t do that now because 5 minutes ago you were telling me I had to declare all options !!!!

I’m now cancelling over £2000 worth of car insurance with Admiral and going with LV.

I wonder if this is a language barrier thing and the guy meant to ask about aftermarket mods rather than factory options?

One of the car insurers that I've used definitely wanted to know what factory options I had, I'm not 100% sure but I think it was Admiral.

This seems to be quite a recent thing. Last year with Admiral, my chat re options added quite a few minutes to the call, mainly over chat about the adaptive cruise. Although this could be less of an inconvenience in years to come, as option variables become less common with the increase in "packs".

Can you imagine ten or so years ago "sorry, we're not paying out on your A3 - our research tells us you would have had automatic headlights with your panoramic sunroof, and you failed to tell us about the auto lights".

I renewed with Admiral in August and moved to a multi-car policy including my wife's car. We didn't have to go through any of this nonsense for either car.

I've always used the specialist Heritage Car Insurance who have got their own multi car scheme. No issues with the types of car on cover and I think they have started offering a direct personal client manager instead of this massive impersonal call center nonsense. https://www.heritagecarinsurance.co.uk/insurance/m...

This is Admiral's post July 2021 policy document. You need to declare all options if you want them covered.

Modifications Any changes to your vehicle’s standard specification, including accessories and additional parts, optional extras and aftermarket alterations, trade related changes and parts.

Your policy does not cover modifications. If you make a claim for loss or damage to your vehicle, provided it is economical to do so, we will only pay the cost of replacing parts needed for your vehicle to meet the manufacturer’s specification along with any optional extras and/or disability adaptations you have declared. Manufacturer’s optional extras and disability adaptations are only covered if they have been declared and we agreed to cover them.

And I agree, don't go with Insurance companies that require this.

Unfortunately declaring every little thing is technically a requirement. Absolute pain in the backside these days with the length of manufacturer option lists.

With my motorcycle insurance, the company I use publishes a list of acceptable mods that aren't even required to be declared, which covers many of the things you might want to do to it anyway - including performance-enhancing ones like exhaust systems, air filters, screens, braided brake hoses and even the lights/indicators. If they're road-legal, you're covered and don't even have to mention it. Completely different attitude to car insurers.

This isn't a new thing with Admiral, they've been like this for a while

Anything that is non-standard must be declared
