Selling gold soverigns

My wife and her sister have rediscovered their christening gold in an old safe while clearing their parents house and I have taken it on myself to sell them and distribute the funds between them - just trying to work out the best way to sell them.

The collection is 8 gold sovereigns dating from between 1895 to 1965, and a single 100 Corona Austrian gold coin from 1915 (I assume from reading up on them this makes it a reproduction rather from that date). All in they weigh 98 grams, so have some intrinsic value, but guess there is some added value by being coins.

Looking for some help on how to sell, based in Berkshire and go to London so any brokers around would be useful too.

I was at school in Nottingham in the sixties, the bus fare home was 4d. Some of the coins in circulation were over a hundred years old and extremely worn - I just got into the habit of saving them.

Also noting that silver coins pre 1947 were actually 50% silver. Pre 1920 it was 92.5% or sterling silver, this had disappeared by the sixties.

Some rare coins, that I may have used for my bus fare, will now cost you hundreds of pounds. Fascinating in a geeky way.

Thanks all for the help here - trying to work out spot value for each coin and then look at 96% of spot value as my ideal price point. Will give all the above a call though.

You can do selling by post nowadays, if don't want to travel into London.
A couple of years ago a work colleague of mine got a better deal in person (around an extra £20 iirc for his mums jewellery) than advertise online in Hatton Garden.

This reminded me of when I first started work in 1996 creating intranet pages for Shell. First of all I started with Word, converting to HTML and then later on using Frontpage and tidying up the HTML in notepad.

When I saw this site I had visions of him editing the page on an old Gateway 2000 Pentium II with Windows 95 and Frontpage. Checking the source it appears I might not be far off...

Exactly, it just works. Thus it's perfect for purpose.

Even on my small iPhone SE mk1, or my 4k 32" PC monitor and Firefox, the website is perfectly functional. Win!



As for gold, there are loads worth a look.

I'm pretty sure Hatton Garden Metals do decent prices on coins, and usually give a bit above spots for decent/certain sovs.
