Purchase Tax outside EU

I've just bought an electronic device from a company who ship from Poland (EU).

Am I going to get my pants pulled down on import duty?

Depends on how much it cost. Up to £135 the seller is supposed to handle the VAT and you won’t get hit with customs. Over that and you can expect a bill for both.

Years ago I ordered stuff from the US and never got hit.

Is it pretty strict now? Has anyone got "lucky"?
