Amazon not accepting visa credit cards from Jan 22

Got that email. Indeed a bold move. It's rather (historically) ironic that they however accept AMEX who back in the day were the much hated card provider in UK/Europe.
Personally I have been settling all my amazon and other online spending to my AMEX for a while now since their big push for adoption.

It appears to be restricted to UK issued VISA credit cards.

Debit cards & non-UK issued cards not affected.

Presumably there is a charging anomaly that VISA were not prepared to correct ?

The EU cap on transaction fees that no longer applies to the UK means Visa are planning to increase their fees on UK-based cards. Amazon don't want to pay those higher fees.

Both my Visa debit cards (First Direct and RBS) have changed to Mastercard, seems a wholesale change by UK banks. Bit of a pain having to update a bunch of subscriptions, ecommerse sites, memebrships etc, until the new number is memorised like my Visa one was.

I'd also noticed my Santander debit switched from VISA to Mastercard in the past six months.

Seems they are annoying a few people.

My FD debit card and RBS Credir card have both changed to MasterCard. FD CC is still Visa for some reason.

I imagined it was all down to fees. Poor old Amazon, down to their last trillion dollars.

Now that we're out of the EU perhaps we can have 1% cashback on CC purchases again

It’s a bit of a pain, I have 2 credit cards, 1 Visa, 1 MasterCard, the Visa one is changing to MasterCard, I had 1 of each in case of issues like they had a few years ago when Visa (I think it was Visa) stopped working. The cash back offers look ok with Amex so I applied yesterday.

I had the silly idea that it might stop people buying crap they don't really need as I'd just presumed they'd have to use a debit card instead and therefore pay for it straight away. I guess there are still other options though and the above mentioned Amazon card.

I wonder if it might start a wider spread situation with other online shops?

Amazon in particular are moaning because most of their .co.uk transactions are actually done in Luxembourg, for tax reasons .. Visa are suggesting an increase in fees to 1.5 per cent of the transaction value for credit card payments made online or over the phone between the UK and EU, and 1.15 per cent for debit card transactions, up from 0.3 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively, in essence making it 1% of your Amazon order more expensive. As a deeply price-driven retailer, this is a big number.

Interestingly (or not!) Mastercard have already raised their rates because the EU cap is gone. So, presumably, one can guess that there is significantly more business done using Visa than Mastercard at Amazon (unless I missed it and they’ve already moaned about that as well).

Amazon have just gone public with their negotiations with visa .. ‘do you want 100% of no pie, or a smaller % of a massive pie?’

Any recommendations for non-visa credit cards with the best cash back? I had a quick search, but some of them include a monthly fee which if I'm only using it for Amazon purchases probably wouldn't cost in.

What I find most interesting is they're still taking Amex.

In my experience Amex fees have always been by far the highest, which is why the best reward cards are usually Amex and many small businesses don't take them.

It'd be interesting to know how much Amazon have managed screw Amex down on fees if Visa is the first one they're cutting...
