long shot, but has anyone gone a similar process re: paypal attempting to claim back funds?

short long story:

1. I sell £50 item via Ebay (software)
2. Item is shown as delivered/ activated & used
3. buyer claims he is the victim of identity fraud & his account hacked & opens up claim
4. Ebay finds in favour of buyer
5. PayPal attempts to chargeback (luckily) on expired debit card & want me to update account with valid debit card so they can claim refund
6. lots of toing & froing between PayPal call centre, explaining that as the item was delivered, can be proven to be delivered & cannot be returned to me as it used, so i wont be making a payment to them ...no joy
7. PayPal pass onto debt collection agency, i repeat no.6 explanation to them ...not interested
8. debt collection agency email, phone & send letters at least twice a week for 3 months ...then just stop

Is this just a PayPal chancing their arm tactic to recoup funds?

& if it goes to court, will i be liable- as to me, it seems its an issue that is for PayPal & the 3rd party to sort?

Debt collection agencies are merely a form of cheap sabre rattling. You've already presented your case to them but they can't give up or they've lost all chance of their £10 or whatever they get. I doubt they will take you to Small Claims for £50, because it will cost them that much to do it. Even if they do, you have a good case (with the evidence hopefully) to defend with.

I've never known Paypal do court. However, you will not be able to use Paypal again.

Maybe a different e-mail address and/or bank account?

I thought eBay and Paypal were divorced now.

Sellers can no longer use PayPal however buyers can still use it as an option until July 2023.

Wouldn't you have to use a different physical address too?

You will because eventually Ebay will figure out you're a returnee and they will permanently ban you. Once Ebay stlist you you're pretty much fked ever using them again and good luck trying to reverse their decision.
