Who best for will writing, solicitor or will writing service.

We are in the process of updating/re-writing and ended up talking to a will writing service. Wish I hadn't in the end.

Are we better off going to a solicitor, or are the will writing services pretty good?

Solicitor all day long. Will writing services have to do loads to make money and quality suffers. Solicitors use them as loss leaders to then gain long term clients for other things, like dealing with the estate on death, which is profitable work.

How much roughly for a standard will? Mines just gonna be I leave everything to my partner / kids.

Something around £350 or £450 for a couple to do mirror wills as long as it's simple. Add a few hundred if it's complicated.

For something as straight forward as this, is there something wrong with using a free template which you can download? I am no expert so someone who knows better can explain.

You could in theory just download it, write the names in and get it signed with witnesses.

A lot of these services offer on line services where they can charge an annual subscription fee so that the will is accessible without the worry of losing a hard document. However if you want to take the risk or have a safe place to keep it, you could just keep a hard copy and not go for an annual subscription service - since annual costs could in the long run end up costing more than just getting a solicitor to do it.
