Pre pay meter charges?

I have a holiday home that we visit every few weeks and rent out as and when.
It has a pre pay electric meter, I never bothered getting it changed as it doesn’t cause me a problem as i usually keep it topped up with over £150.00 and we don’t use that much anyway.

With the cost of electric about to rise significantly I was thinking of loading up the meter with a £1000.00 or more.

But I am unsure how it works. When you buy the credit for the meter are you buying a sum of electric at todays prices or do they just have your cash up front ready to pay at what ever the cost is on the day?

I think you will find there is a limit on how much you can pre load, something like £250 or something I read somewhere
