Financing later life with fixed cash pot
Discussion
My Dad passed away a few weeks ago and I am just going through the finances. The concise story is there is a pot of ~£175k (will be more like £325k once my Mum downsizes the house). She has a state pension of £400 a month, very low outgoings, and is 82. We are off to get profession advice on what to do however what sort of things should we be doing to ensure she has a steady income for the pot of cash? What sort of stuff should she avoid doing?

Sorry to hear about your dad, the issue is this sounds like a simple problem but actually it could be pretty complicated at these levels, especially if the money is invested and ends up growing over say a 10 year period. I think your best bet is to speak to an IFA and give them full disclosure and see what they say. I would imagine you would be better off paying for advice now rather than when you have to deal with her estate down the road and realise perhaps you could have managed it better to save some agro.
