I've had Barclays Blue Rewards for many years as part of the Premier account). The fee is taken from your account each month and then the 'reward' is debited into your Blue Rewards account which is separate from your main account.

You can then let the balance build in the rewards account or transfer it back to your main account.

If you just have the two direct debits then you will in effect be nett £0 each month (£5 fee, £5 reward)

I have my mortgage with Barclays so receive an additional £3 each month.

My rewards account gets credited with £8 every month but nett I am only +£3

-£5 (fee) + £5 (2 x direct debits) + £3 (mortgage)

i'm similar, just for joining they give me a couple of quid each month. The pluses are in one account and the minuses in another.
