During a house clearance of a late relative we found a container that appears to contain gold dust. It certainly feels weighty for the size of it.

I'd like to know how we can test it, find it's origin, how to cash it in.

You could google "Testing gold, specific gravity method" and see if you wanted to give it a go yourself?

Thanks, I had a look, but the gold is in gold dust form, in paper wraps, so I can't easily immerse in water.

A friendly local dental technician (lab) might help. They sell gold dust (filings) regularly.

I'm not sure it is any different - 'Driller' in Paris would know.
