Everybody now has an American Express, in my place of work, so many people pay with it.

I remember it being exclusive with the gold and platinum ones but now everyone has those British airways ones, from scruffy people to kids.

I wouldn’t care if the people didn’t scream ‘DO YOU TAKE AMEX’ as if it’s some sort of achievement.

I thought the idea being American Express was that it had no limits or interest providing you pay it all off within 1 month

Thoughts?

It's just a credit card same as all the others. I had one a few years ago, BA one (I'm poor and scruffy too), but in reality they are crap because not everywhere takes them (that may have improved since I had mine though)

It's just a credit card like the others. It's not as popular as Visa and master card because I think Amex charge more to the venders to use it.
Remember when Gold cards and Platinum cards were the ones go for as you needed a certain level of income to get them. It was like a mini status symbol. These days don't bother flashing your card unless it's made of metal.

People ask whether you take Amex because a lot of places don't.

Some Amex cards are credit cards, some are charge cards needing to be paid off every month. Most of them aren't exclusive at all, though the charge cards are a bit expensive. But there is the legendary Centurion card, apparently if you have one of the other cards and spend upwards of £20,000 a month you might be invited to apply for one, though that one has a huge fee.

I had one when I was 18 (and stupid) in 1984, loved the look and exclusivity of it at the time but that soon wore off.

Just associate them with high charges for establishments and Brighton & Hove Albion FC.

Meh.

Our company issued us with an Amex card, great for business execs staying at corporate hotels I suppose but as a lowly tech on the occasional field trip you invariably ended up using your own card. And I never got the offer of putting my head between them and going bbl bbl bbl either. frown

Seemed simple enough to me, too.

Show us on the doll where Amex hurt you, OP.

I've had an Amex card since 1980. Back then there were the occasional places not accepting the card. Now, however, I cannot remember the last time it was refused. I use it for supermarkets, restaurants, pubs, travelling, car fuel, online purchases etc, no problem.

I actually just have a Lloyd’s credit card because they have great 0% offers on it, I don’t need a second and wouldn’t apply because I was under the impression they were super exclusive

I agree I sounded condescending in my OP, I didn’t mean to appear that way.

I’m aware of the current financial climate and all I see these days is American Express cards but my questions have been answered

I thought it was the Coutts card that was the one that signified 'I am considerably richer than yow'

I have mine as the default on Google Pay. Recent nopes were a car park machine, a bar, a fast food place and Wilko.
