Quick advice needed - payment method for car!
Discussion
Just to cut to the chase: I’m due to change cars today. Have the cash in the bank and trade-in all sorted, but just realised this morning that I left my wallet at a friends house the other day and I can’t get back there as they’re away now for the weekend.
Idea was to pay a token £500 or so on my credit card and the rest by bank transfer to ensure I get full consumer credit cover. The issue is that if I pay the whole lot by bank transfer am I right in thinking I’ll lose the credit card protection and be left a lot more exposed if the worst should happen (in terms of the car turning out to be a shed and the dealership being unreasonable)?
If so, I can use my wife’s card to stick £500 on and give her it back this afternoon. Annoyingly I only have my visa debit card on my Apple Pay on the phone. I’m not sure I get the same protection if I use that do I?
If anyone could advise if I’m worrying over nothing or whether I should definitely try and out part of the payment on a CC for the extra protection? I’ve looked online but read conflicting info.

I think you should put a small amount on your wife's credit card if you can't use your own. I don't believe Sec.75 applies to CC transactions via Apple/Google Pay, PayPal or payments via BT. As long as the car is <£30k the CC will give Sec.75 protection.

That’s very helpful. Thank you.Edited by Funk on Saturday 14th January 10:53
I think I will just stick a token amount on the card. Car is £22k so under the limit.
