Self Assessment Deadline - Who forgot then?
Discussion
I didn't forget, accountant did it, I logged in on 21st Jan and because of the amount I couldn't pay it by card or bank transfer or from bank direct so had to opt for Direct Debit option through the Government Gateway. As of this morning the DD is showing as set up with all the correct details on the gateway but nothing has left my account.
Trying to get in touch with them or the bank is impossible. Bet there's a fine on the way!

A record 11.7 million customers submitted their tax returns on time, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has revealed.
On 31 January, 861,085 customers filed online to meet the deadline, some with minutes to spare. There were 36,767 customers who filed in the last hour before the deadline, but the peak hour for filing on the day was 16:00 and 16:59, when 68,462 customers submitted their tax return.
More than 12 million customers were expected to file a Self Assessment tax return for the 2021 to 2022 tax year. HMRC is urging customers who missed the deadline to submit theirs as soon as possible or risk facing a penalty.

Accountant says it is happening a lot this year. I just paid what my accountant says I probably owe and am leaving the to sort it out in their own sweet time.
Got my assessment from the accountant last June I think, like others bombarded with emails, text messages reminding me of the deadline, sneaky rule change to note that they now want payment on account for next tax year as last tax year payment was over a certain amount of money? Set up the payment through my bank to hit their account on the 27th January it did so. Despite this got 2 emails on Saturday and Sunday 3 text messages up to the 31st, another email this morning and a text message reminding me it was now the 1st of Feb and if I hadn't already done so make the payment as soon as. Considering they've got all my contact details I suppose it would be too much to ask HMRC to at least acknowledge I had paid within the time frame. But then again I'm just a small one man band business owner. I don't owe fortunes and can't afford expensive barristers to legally challenge the process. HMRC have got most of us exactly where they need us to be!
My usually brilliant accountant assured me in Dec that I was 'on his list' when I sent a follow up to my figures, I sent another chase earlier in Jan and finally got the draft return through a couple of days ago. He apparently submitted yesterday and sent me the receipt with submission reference/IRmark from HMRC however it's not showing when I log in to my account at HMRC so I'm a bit concerned.
He assures me it's been submitted and will take a couple of days to show up and not to worry.
The sharp increase in fees that have gone along with the drop in service is grating and I'm expecting big improvements, he does my company accounts as well so there is some inertia to overcome if I want to move.

Similar to what happened with mine the week before. Logged on, says return received but no tax to pay (as if...). It's an IT problem, worth giving them a call if you can stand it just to show them you've noticed. He assures me it's been submitted and will take a couple of days to show up and not to worry.

Bit sloppy and forgetful this year....submitted my wife's SA online on 08/01/23 and was waiting for the letter through the post to confirm due amount and also act as a reminder to make the necessary payment....however....due to ongoing Royal Mail delays, that never materialised through the letterbox and ultimately (with only ourselves to blame) she / we ended up forgetting to make payment yesterday. Woke up and immediately remembered first thing this morning made payment by 0700am - do you think we're still liable for the £100 fine?
We've never been late before and nothing was technically owed for 21/22 period as this was a payment on account for 22/23 anyway....? If that even makes a difference?
