I know we're all probably in the same boat but just had a text from EE hiking my monthly cost by 14.4% - seems like an utter fking piss-take in the current climate. I know they can per T's and C's but it's still leaving a bad taste as they don't have to apply that level of uplift.

Are all the mobile networks gouging customers similarly?

Edit: weird I can put 'piss' in the post but not in the title... biggrin

Same. I have contracts with EE, Vodafone and O2. EE the first with the rise, but I'm sure they will all be doing it soon.

Virgin media for me, (broadband and TV) warned me that my bill will increase by 17% from April. I called the customer retention team and a very amenable chap gave me a 40% discount for 18 months so I’ll actually pay much less than currently.

Incidentally, my new 18 month contract says explicitly that the charge will increase automatically every year by RPI+3.9%. What business can get away with that ffs.

In contrast, my Zen FTTP is £40 a month and fixed for as long as I keep it which is pretty darn good.

Zen = good
EE = wkers

I'm on a SIM only contract with EE that only costs £11pm so while 14.4% seems a bit greedy, it won't affect me that much.

I think EE are very expensive, they seem to endlessly up the charges and data volumes. It's a bloody phone I don't need 125GB +

Index linked is one thing - after all there are plenty of people on strike trying for the same and we expect our pensions to do the same. The extra 3.9% is set out by Government I believe - so the companies grab it 'because they can' - but at this time it makes little sense to me; just a license to increase inflation still more.

A lot of the ISPs are doing the same at the moment. I guess it's easier to get away with when all the competition are doing the same.

From ISP review - https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2023/01/jan-...

I have a PAYG Lebara Sim and pay £5 a month which has not increased in the three years I have been with them.

Personally I would never get a contract again for this reason alone.

I still have a contract as in all fairness I get 30% F&F discount with EE. As soon as they finally remove/withdraw that I'll move to buying phone and tariff separately but at the moment that F&F disocount is for the device as well as the tariff so it's good value from that perspective.

Well, unitil there's a 14.4% price hike...!

They are all at it, yet the fking S in government say you can't ask for a payrise because it causes inflation

There is some irony in the current situation, I guess the gov don't want you to have it to spend and the way things are going they are getting their way.

I’ve had aTesco sim on a rolling monthly contract for £6 which has never gone up, not sure if it can stay that way!

Living standards can't increase forever. While there are genuine cases of hardship, people should get used to having a bit less spare dosh sometimes.

People are far too dependent on 'the gubberment' to make everything better. The Government has no money of its own, it either comes from Johnny Taxpayer or is borrowed and has to be paid back with interest. So yep, everybody can have a 20% pay rise, hurrah parteee - as long as they don't mind paying more tax to pay for it... The key is that people need to be more productive.

I'll be contentious and say that very few people actually need a smartphone. So that's a few hundred quid liberated to spend on important things like food and heating.

That’s BT for you, we’re allowed so we will.

God knows why they’re aloud to do this, very few other people are to hike a price in a contract, things like car finance and gas etc are all fixed for a term usually.

I've not had the message yet. I assume 14.4% is the maximum they are allowed to increase prices?

As has been already mentioned if you are out of contract call & re-negotiate.

With EE I was paying £25, called them up & reduced the same package (10GB etc) down to . . . £10

I was anticipating this so took out my contract in the month they had increased their prices. Ie they wouldn't increase another 12m by which time my contract is done.

Their price hikes are nothing but taking the piss because they can.

Likewise and I recon if I leave they would drop it back to £11.
