There is absolutely no way that the true rate of inflation is around 10%. If I bought something that had increased by that level in the past year I would be over the moon. I think the way this is touted as our rate of inflation is tantamount to the propaganda issued by North Korea to its people. It's a total con and I'm at a loss why there aren't any proper journalists jumping all over this. I know inflation reflects a shopping basket, which contains some odd things like sports bras but it's about time our lying, deceitful leaders were called out on it.

I think that's with food and energy excluded. Because nobody needs any of that stuff....

The inflation numbers are complete made up doo doo, relying on the population's woeful maths education and indifference.

Go look up how many different definitions of inflation the UK has used in the last 100 years. If they don't like the number they just pick a different definition.

Isn't it simply a case that people will have different personal rates of inflation?

The basket of goods used won't be "one size fits all".

Some of the items in the shopping basket they use are strange.
CDs were in it until recently.

You can work out your personal inflation online, I did it and it was something like 7%

San pellengreno in Waitrose is up from £1.00 a bottle to £1.25, and the organic sausages I like are up to £5.25 from £5, but coconut cream is down from £1.25 to £1

When my local Tesco put up McVitie Waffles to £1.70 a few months back I started buying the Tesco ones at £1.30.

Went in yesterday and they are now £1.60.

Thus my personal inflation is nearly 20%.

Don't get me on CoffeeMate, almost 50% rise recently, even at Lidl.

Profiteering plain and simple.

The Greek yoghurt I buy has gone from £4.50 to $5.50 and down from 1l to 950ml = 23%
Chocolate from £1.95 to £2.45 = 26%
I just don't buy them now.

Food price inflation looks to be 20%

I wonder if the inflation figures take into account 'shrinkflation' I had a quick squiz at the basket they use but couldn't see weights or volume of each item.

I reckon pubs and restaurants are up about 50% on pre-pandemic levels - that's just three years.

Particularly annoying is that many are increasing both their prices AND the service charge. I keep seeing places that have added a sneaky 1% (i.e. now 13.5%) and even found one place charging 15% service.

I agree but i actually think its more like +50% in just the last 12-18mths!

And yes service charge of 12.5% is very common here in Leeds, whereas it was always just 10% before.

We went to Miami a month ago and 20% was very much the norm there, so I suspect thats likely where the UK will end up in not so long.

Well my local kebab shop has seen their quarterly utility bill (gas & electric) got from £3K to £11K a quarter. He says he really needs to triple his prices but realises no one will pay £20+ for a kebab. He's going to call it a day, after 35 years.
