Hypothetically if I earn 90k per annum I would still be entitled to 30 hours childcare.

If I then sold £50k of shares in the business I work for, which were issued for £0 at startup and now worth £50k (thus £50k capital gain?) would that put me over the £100k threshold for 30 hours - and worse, does it start the whole tax free allowance tapering etc?

Not an expert, but I think the share sale would be more a capital gains tax concern. It's not earnings income and not liable to income tax, so not relevant for childcare or tapering.
Best to look it up though

It might also depend on how the shares were issued originally ie under a share option plan or LTIPs or just as A shares.
I certainly paid income tax on shares issued under options and LTIP’s.
If given shares in the company then different tax treatment on sale I believe.

Do you have a buyer who's prepared to pay £50k for the shares?

As they're not quoted their value could be £0
