A few months ago I applied for the Barclaycard avios when they had he 50k bonus offer I was declined with no reason given. I sent a letter requesting the reason but have never had a reply.

Credit ratings with all 3 agency's is excellent as is affordability (have 2 current cards but would close one).

I can't for the life of me understand why and I really want a new card.

Any ideas

If you use your current credit cards and clear the balance every month Barclaycard will most likely think 'we wont make any money so what is the point'

Indeed I do as one is an amex and the other I don't use unless somewhere doesn't take amex

It did say on my credit reports they like to see between 1 and 25% credit utilisation but is it really worth paying £5 a month in interest to maintain a 1% load on my non amex?

They slashed my limit a few years ago.

I always pay in full and they don't make money from me in interest. They make a lot from retailers where I use the card though.

If you use a card for credit, and then promptly pay it off, there is no benefit to the bank.
What do they gain from issuing a card to you?

Did you try their eligibility checker first? I think if you had you would have known that you’d be turned down.

They earn a fee from the retailer on every transaction. Its likely that's how they make most of their money.

The retailer pays them commission every time you use it.

Indeed hence the whole amex being accepted hardly anywhere cos it's too expensive

True, but they want cardholders to gradually build up ongoing debt - on which interest will then be due each month.

My Amex statement begs to differ.

I find it weird who does and doesn't take it. It doesn't stop me putting almost everything through on it

But today stock X doesn't take it

Ah, that common misconception about Amex has come up once again!

so with the card in hand maybe the user will one day spot some sparkly tat they cant afford and get it , then pay 5£ a month for 36 years

Not at all. I have a friend who likes to use Amex. When we split a restaurant bill they often refuse to take his Amex card. He has to carry a second card all the time "just in case".

True story.

Even the pinnacle of council, B&M takes Amex these days.
